RESUMO: O uso de anestésicos em procedimentos aquícolas pode garantir melhor bem-estar e sobrevivência dos animais durante o transporte e ciclo de produção. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a eficácia anestésica dos óleos essenciais (OEs) de Lippia alba (EOLA) e Ocimum gratissimum (EOOG) para o camarão rosa Farfantepenaeus paulensis, e Origanum majorana (EOO) e Cymbopogon citratus (EOC) para o camarão branco Litopenaeus vannamei. Os camarões foram expostos à: (i) 500, 750 ou 1000 µL L-1 EOLA e (ii) 50, 100, 150 ou 250 µL L-1 de EOOG para F. paulensis, e (iii) 150, 300 ou 500 µL L-1 EOC, e (iv) 400 ou 800 µL L-1 de EOO para L. vannamei. Os tempos de indução foram dependentes da concentração. Houve diminuição do tempo de indução, mas para EOLA esse padrão foi observado apenas na anestesia. Os tempos de indução para sedação e anestesia foram significativamente mais rápidos para os grupos EOC e EOO. A concentração de 250 µL L-1 de EOOG resultou em 30% de mortalidade. O tempo de recuperação foi significativamente maior a 800 µL L-1 de EOO em comparação aos outros OEs. No geral, a ação dos OEs foi significativamente diferente entre as duas espécies de camarões. Em conclusão, ambos os OEs anestesiaram efetivamente o F. paulensis e L. vannamei.

ABSTRACT: The use of anesthetics in aquaculture ensures better animal welfare and survival during transport and the production cycle. The present study evaluated the anesthetic efficacy of essential oils (EOs) of Lippia alba (EOLA) and Ocimum gratissimum (EOOG) for pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis, and EOs of Origanum majorana (EOO) and Cymbopogon citratus (EOC) for white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. shrimp were exposed to (i) 500, 750 or 1000 µL L-1 of EOLA or (ii) 50, 100, 150 or 250 µL L-1 of EOOG, and L. vannamei were exposed to (iii) 150, 300 or 500 µL L-1 of EOC or (iv) 400 or 800 µL L-1 of EOO. The induction times were concentration dependent, with a decrease in induction time with the increase of the EOs concentration, but for EOLA, this pattern was observed only for anesthesia. Induction times for sedation and anesthesia were significantly shorter for shrimp exposed to EOC and EOO. The highest concentration of EOOG (250 µL L-1) resulted in 30% mortality. The recovery time was significantly longer for shrimp exposed to 800 µL L-1 of EOO compared to the other EOs. Overall, the action of EOs significantly differed between the two shrimp species. In conclusion, the tested EOs effectively anesthetized F. paulensis and L. vannamei.

RESUMO Este estudo objetivou analisar o efeito de baixa e alta dureza da água em interação com diferentes pH da água em pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus). Juvenis de pacu foram submetidos a baixa (50 mg CaCO3 L-1 - BDA) ou alta dureza da água (120 mg CaCO3 L-1 - ADA) em pH da água de 5.5 ácido), 7.5 (circum-neutro) ou 9.0 (alcalino) por 15 dias. Foram coletados brânquias e rim (dias 1, 5 e 15). Atividade de Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) e H+-ATPase do tipo vacuolar (V-ATPase) branquial foram maiores em pH alcalino com ADA no dia 1. Atividade de NKA e V-ATPase branquial e renal foram maiores em pH ácido com BDA no dia 15. Atividade de NKA branquial de pacus submetidos a pH alcalino com BDA foi maior que aqueles expostos para ADA. Em peixes expostos a pH ácido ou alcalino com BDA houve redução da capacidade antioxidante nas brânquias e rim e aumento dos níveis de “substâncias reativas ao ácido tiobarbitúrico” (TBARS). Em ADA aumentou a atividade da “glutationa-S-transferase” (GST) e reduziu níveis de TBARS nas brânquias e rim. No dia 15, a atividade da GST foi maior em pH ácido com BDA. Em conclusão, pH circum-neutro apresentou menor estresse oxidativo e poucas variações na atividade de ATPases e ADA reduziu efeitos deletérios em peixes expostos a pH ácido ou alcalino.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to assess the effects of low and high water hardness in interaction with different water pH in pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus). Pacu juveniles were subjected to low (50 mg CaCO3 L-1 - LWH) or high water hardness (120 mg CaCO3 L-1 - HWH) at water pH of 5.5 (acidic), 7.5 (circumneutral) or 9.0 (alkaline) for 15 days. Gills and kidneys were collected (days 1, 5 and 15). Gill Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) and vacuolar-type H+-ATPase (V-ATPase) activities were higher in alkaline pH with HWH on day 1. Gill and kidney NKA and V-ATPase activities were higher in acidic pH with LWH on day 15. Gill NKA activity of pacus under alkaline pH with LWH was higher than those exposed to HWH. Reduced antioxidant capacity in the gills and kidney and enhanced thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels were demonstrated in fish exposed to acidic or alkaline pH, mainly with LWH. HWH increased glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity and reduced TBARS levels in the gills and kidney. On day 15, GST activity was increased at acidic pH with LWH. In conclusion, circumneutral pH presents less oxidative stress and fewer variations in ATPases and HWH reduced deleterious effects in fish exposed to acidic or alkaline pH.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do sistema de cultivo tradicional em água clara e do em bioflocos sobre os estados antioxidante e imunológico do camarão Litopenaeus vannamei. Amostras (brânquia, hemolinfa e hepatopâncreas) foram coletadas nos dias 15, 30 e 60 do período experimental. Os seguintes parâmetros imunológicos foram analisados a cada tempo amostral: hemócitos granulares e hialinos, proteína total e apoptose. Também foram realizados ensaios da atividade da glutamato-cisteína ligase (GCL) e das concentrações de glutationa reduzida (GSH) e de substâncias reativas ao ácido tiobarbitúrico (TBARS). Os parâmetros imunológicos avaliados não diferiram significativamente entre os tratamentos. Os camarões criados em água clara apresentaram maiores níveis de peroxidação lipídica nas brânquias e de GCL na hemolinfa nos dias 15 e 30. Camarões em bioflocos apresentaram maior taxa de sobrevivência, e a água não precisou ser renovada durante o período experimental. O sistema de bioflocos melhora os níveis de produtividade e promove um ambiente de cultivo mais saudável.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the traditional culture system in clear water and of the one in microbial flocs on the antioxidant and immunological status of Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp. Samples (gill, hemolymph, and hepatopancreas) were collected on days 15, 30, and 60 of the experimental period. The following immunological parameters were analyzed at each evaluation time: granular and hyaline hemocytes, total protein, and apoptosis. Assays on glutamate-cysteine ligase (GCL) activity and on the concentrations of reduced glutathione (GSH) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were also performed. The evaluated immunological parameters did not differ significantly between treatments. Shrimp reared in clear water showed higher levels of lipid peroxidation in the gills and of GCL activity in the hemolymph on days 15 and 30. Shrimp in microbial floc had a higher survival rate, and the water did not have to be renewed during the experimental period. The microbial floc system improves production levels and provides a healthier culture environment.

ABSTRACT This study investigated the anesthetic potential of the essential oil (EO) of Aloysia polystachya in juveniles of dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus). Fish were exposed to different concentrations of EO of A. polystachya to evaluate time of induction and recovery from anesthesia. In the second experiment, fish were divided into four groups: control, ethanol and 50 or 300 µL L−1 EO of A. polystachya, and each group was submitted to induction for 3.5 min and recovery for 5 or 10 min. The blood gases and glucose levels showed alterations as a function of the recovery times, but Na+ and K+ levels did not show any alteration. In conclusion, the EO from leaves of A. polystachya is an effective anesthetic for dusky grouper, because anesthesia was reached within the recommended time at EO concentrations of 300 and 400 µL L−1. However, most evaluated blood parameters showed compensatory responses due to EO exposure.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of benzocaine and tricaine methanesulfonate on oxidative stress parameters of juvenile tambaqui tissues. Fish (n=80) were anesthetized with benzocaine (100 mg L-1) or tricaine (240 mg L-1) and two control groups were used (non-anesthetized fish and fish exposed to ethanol-only). After anesthetic induction 10 fish/anesthetic were euthanized after 3, 12 and 24 hours post-anesthesia and tissue samplings (gills, liver and brain) were performed. Samples were submitted to analyses of enzyme activity glutathione-S-transferase (GST), cellular lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and total antioxidant capacity (ACAP). ACAP increased in gills of benzocaine treatment after 12 hours. The liver showed a reduction in ACAP of tricaine treatment after 12 hours. Both anesthetic treatments showed an increase of ACAP at 24 hours compared to control group. The activity of the GST enzyme increased in the gills for treatments benzocaine and tricaine after 3 and 12 hours. Liver showed increased GST activity (benzocaine after 24 hours and tricaine after 3 and 24 hours). Lipid damage decreased in gills (both anesthetics) and brain (tricaine) after 24 hours. The results demonstrate that benzocaine and tricaine did not cause oxidative damage in juvenile tambaqui under the experimental conditions herein established.

RESUMO Este estudo analisou a relação entre vários parâmetros de qualidade da água (pH, dureza, alcalinidade, turbidez, ferro e manganês durante 16 anos) com a distribuição de peixes e piscicultura no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. O pH ficou em média em uma faixa neutra (6,5-7,5), mas valores máximos e mínimos atingiram níveis não apropriados para a piscicultura em algumas cidades. Os valores de alcalinidade foram baixos (exceto na região sudoeste do estado), o que poderia contribuir para oscilações no pH. Dureza, turbidez, ferro (exceto na região próxima à cidade de Caçapava do Sul) e manganês ficaram dentro de níveis aceitáveis para a piscicultura, mas a turbidez ocasionalmente elevou-se a níveis fora dessa faixa aceitável e os piscicultores devem ter algum mecanismo para reduzi-los. Em conclusão, de forma geral a qualidade da água do Rio Grande do Sul pode ser considerada adequada para a aquicultura, mas os piscicultores devem conhecer métodos para corrigir a turbidez, como a utilização de sulfato de cálcio.

ABSTRACT This study analyzed the relationship between several water quality parameters (pH, hardness, alkalinity, turbidity, iron and manganese) levels measured over a 16 year period with fish distribution and aquaculture in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil. The mean pH values were within a neutral range (6.5-7.5), but the maximum and minimum values reached inappropriate levels for fish farming in some cities. Alkalinity levels were very low (except in the southwest region of the state), which may have contributed to pH variation. Hardness, turbidity, iron (except the region near Caçapava do Sul City) and manganese were within safe ranges for fish farming; however, turbidity levels occasionally increased to levels outside the safe range. In conclusion, the water quality in the Rio Grande do Sul, in general, can be considered adequate for aquaculture, but the fish farmers must be aware of the methods to reduce turbidity, such as the use of calcium sulfate.

O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar o fluxo de íons e a excreção de amônia em jundiás transportados em sacos plásticos em três diferentes densidades de carga: 221, 286 e 365g L-1 por 5h. Uma amostra de água foi coletada no início e ao final do transporte para as análises dos parâmetros de qualidade da água. Houve uma relação positiva significativa entre o efluxo de íons e relação negativa entre excreção de amônia e densidade de carga, demonstrada pelas seguintes equações: Na+: y=-24.5-0.27x, r2=0.99, Cl-: y=40.2-0.61x, r2=0.98, K+: y=8.0-27.6x, r2=0.94; excreção de amônia: y=-11.43+0.017x, r2=0.95, em que y: fluxo de íons (mmol kg-1 h-1) ou excreção de amônia (mg kg-1 h-1) e x: densidade de carga (g). Portanto, o aumento da densidade de carga aumenta a perda de íons, mas reduz a excreção de amônia durante o transporte de jundiá, indicando possibilidade de acúmulo de amônia no corpo

The objective of this study was to verify net ion fluxes and ammonia excretion in silver catfish transported in plastic bags at three different loading densities: 221, 286 and 365g L-1 for 5h. A water sample was collected at the beginning and at the end of the transport for analysis of water parameters. There was a significant positive relationship between net ion effluxes and negative relationship between ammonia excretion and loading density, demonstrated by the following equations: Na+: y-24.5-0.27x, r2=0.99, Cl-: y=40.2-0.61x, r2=0.98, K+: y=8.0-27.6x, r2=0.94; ammonia excretion: y=-11.43+0.017x, r2=0.95, where y: net ion flux (mmol kg-1 h-1) or ammonia excretion (mg kg-1 h-1) and x: loading density (g). Therefore, the increase of loading density increases net ion loss, but reduces ammonia excretion during the transport of silver catfish, indicating the possibility of ammonia accumulation

O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar os parâmetros de estresse oxidativo no fígado e brânquias de juvenis de linguado (307,0 ± 16,0 g e 30,0 ± 4,0 cm) submetidos a diferentes temperaturas da água (17,1, 23,0 e 28,8ºC) por 72 h e mantidos na salinidade de 25‰. Após uma aclimatação de sete dias, em 23ºC, os peixes foram transferidos para tanques de 200 L contendo água do mar (salinidade 25‰) em 28,8ºC (choque quente), 17,1ºC (choque frio) ou 23,0ºC (controle), cinco repetições (cinco peixes/tanque). A coleta de amostras ocorreu em 0 (pré-exposição), 3, 24, 48 e 72 h após o choque térmico. O linguado exposto a 17,1ºC e 28,8ºC apresentaram um significante aumento dos níveis de TBARS e atividade da GST no fígado pós-exposição (PE) em relação ao controle (23ºC). A atividade da CAT no fígado apresentou um aumento significativo em 17,1ºC, nas primeiras 48 h, e subsequente diminuição em 72 h PE em relação a 28,8ºC. As brânquias do linguado apresentaram significante aumento dos níveis de TBARS e atividade da GST e CAT quando submetidos a 17,1ºC e 28,8ºC em relação a 23,0ºC. Foram observadas alterações nos níveis de peroxidação lipídica (LPO) e atividade de GST e CAT no fígado e brânquias de linguado em resposta as espécies reativas de oxigênio (ROS) produzidas pelo choque térmico.

The aim of this study was to determine oxidative stress parameters in the liver and gill of Brazilian flounder juveniles (307.0 ± 16.0 g and 30.0 ± 4.0 cm) submitted to different water temperature (17.1, 23.0 and 28.8ºC) for 72 h and maintained at salinity 25‰. After the acclimation of 7 days, in 23ºC, fish were transferred to 200 L tanks containing seawater (salinity 25‰) at 28.8ºC (heat shock), 17.1ºC (cold shock) or 23.0ºC (control), five replicates (five fish tank-1). The sampled collection occurred in 0 (pre-challenge), 3, 24, 48 and 72 h after temperature shock. Flounder exposed to 17.1ºC and 28.8ºC showed significantly higher TBARS levels and GST activity in the liver post-exposition (PE) in relation to the control (23ºC). CAT activity in liver present a significantly increase at 17.1ºC, in first 48 h, and subsequently decrease in 72 h PE in relation to 28.8ºC. The gills of flounder showed significantly higher TBARS levels, GST and CAT activity when submitted at 17.1 and 28.8ºC in relation to 23.0ºC. There were observed changes in lipid peroxidation levels (LPO), CAT and GST activities in the liver and gill of Brazilian flounder in response to reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by thermal shocks.

Alguns supermercadistas de pequeno porte têm procurado enfrentar o maior poder de mercado dos grandes grupos do setor mediante ações cooperativas que se desenvolvem nas chamadas centrais de negócio. De acordo com as perspectivas teóricas representadas pelo neoinstitucionalismo e pela abordagem de redes, especialmente quanto à sua perspectiva relacional, as centrais de negócio de pequenos supermercadistas podem ser definidas como redes cooperativas horizontais, cuja eficácia está associada aos mecanismos formais e informais de coordenação e à coesão relacional entre seus membros. O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a percepção de eficácia, os mecanismos de coordenação e a coesão relacional de uma central de negócios, dentro de uma perspectiva dinâmica, antes e após a fusão ocorrida com uma central de maior porte. Dentro de uma abordagem qualitativa de pesquisa e, para aferir as percepções dos entrevistados com relação à eficácia da rede estudada, a efetividade de seus mecanismos formais e informais de coordenação e a intensidade das relações para a coesão, este trabalho está baseado em entrevistas semiestruturadas com os integrantes da referida central, utilizando-se de um roteiro composto por itens relacionados à percepção de eficácia, aspectos de coordenação e coesão relacional. Constatou-se uma alta percepção de eficácia entre os supermercadistas da rede estudada e que aumenta consideravelmente a partir da integração com a rede de maior porte. Constatou-se também uma importante convivência entre mecanismos formais e informais de coordenação, além de relações coesas entre os membros da central.

Some small supermarkets have sought to address the increased market power of large groups of the sector through cooperative actions that develop in networks called central business. This work presents and analyzes one of these central business districts in the state of S. Paulo that operates through networks of relationships. Another important contribution is to show the dynamics embedded in this central business district after a merger with a broader network, in a larger municipality. According to the theoretical perspectives represented by the new institutionalism and network approach, especially relational governance, the central business district of small supermarkets can be defined as horizontal cooperative governance actors, where the efficiencies of the goals are linked to formal and informal mechanisms of coordination and strength of relational cohesion that emerged among its members. According to a qualitative research approach and in order to gauge respondents’ perceptions regarding the effectiveness of the network studied, the effectiveness of their formal and informal mechanisms of coordination and intensity of relations for cohesion, the work is based on semi-structured interviews with members of the network using a script composed of items related to perceived effectiveness, aspects of coordination and relational cohesion. There is a high perception of effectiveness among the members of the network studied, and it has increased considerably from the integration with the larger network. There is also an important interaction between formal and informal mechanisms of coordination and maintenance of a cohesive relationship among members.

Este trabalho visa mostrar e analisar um grupo de redes de pequenos supermercadistas no interior do estado de S. Paulo operando por meio de relações cooperativas sob a forma de centrais de negócios. Dentro de uma abordagem qualitativa de pesquisa e utilizando os aportes teóricos do neoinstitucionalismo e teoria de redes, o trabalho foi baseado em entrevistas semiestruturadas com os representantes de quatro centrais. Foi seguido um roteiro composto por itens relacionados à história de formação da central, motivações principais para entrada na rede, fases de desenvolvimento, detalhes operacionais e algumas indicações sobre os mecanismos de coordenação e as características das relações mais relevantes. Constata-se, no caso dos mecanismos de coordenação, uma importante convivência entre mecanismos formais e informais de coordenação. Quanto às relações entre os membros, de modo geral, elas se revelaram coesas. Constata-se também uma alta percepção de eficácia nas centrais estudadas.

This paper aims to demonstrate and analyze a group of small supermarket networks in the state of S. Paul, working through cooperative relationships in the form of core business. Using a qualitative research approach, this work is based on semi-structured interviews with representatives of four plants, using a script composed of items related to the central main motivations for entering the network, development phases, operational details and the coordination mechanisms and characteristics of the most relevant relations. In terms of coordination mechanisms, there is a coexistence of formal and informal mechanisms of coordination. The relations between members, in general, are shown to be cohesive. Finally, there is also a high perception of efficacy.

The capture of juvenile shrimp as live bait for sport fishing has intensified, as has the trade of shrimp in different locations. The transport of shrimp to regions, other than those in which they are captured, is often poorly performed due to the lack of information regarding effective transport, resulting in high mortality of the transported animals. The aim of this study was to determine the optimum stocking density for the transport of juvenile Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis (weight: 5.53 ± 1.20 g) and to evaluate the effect of the addition of hydrated lime in the transport water. Four stocking densities were tested for transport (1, 2, 3 and 4 ind L-1). Following the analysis of the results obtained in the density experiment, the addition of hydrated lime (0.15 g L-1) in the transport water was also tested. Water quality and the final survival were negatively correlated with increasing stocking density. The results of this study demonstrated that the highest density that can be used to avoid mortality is 3 ind L-1 for a maximum period of 10 h. The use of hydrated lime in the transport water attenuated the observed effects on water quality parameters.

La captura de juveniles de camarón como carnada viva para la pesca deportiva se ha intensificado, al igual que el comercio de camarón en diferentes ciudades. El transporte de camarones a regiones distintas de aquellas en las que se capturan, a menudo se realiza en forma inapropiada, debido a la falta de información sobre el transporte eficaz, lo que resulta en una alta mortalidad de los animales transportados. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la densidad óptima para el transporte de camarón rosa Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis (peso: 5,53 ± 1,20 g), y evaluar el efecto de la adición de cal hidratada en el agua de transporte. Se hicieron pruebas con cuatro densidades de siembra para el transporte (1, 2, 3 y 4 ind L-1), y luego del análisis de los resultados obtenidos en el ensayo de densidad, se realizó una prueba con la adición de cal hidratada (0,15 g L-1) en el agua de transporte. La calidad del agua y la sobrevivencia final se correlacionaron negativamente con el aumento de la densidad de población. Los resultados de este estudio demuestran que la densidad más alta que se puede utilizar, para evitar la mortalidad en el transporte de camarón, es de 3 ind L-1 por un periodo máximo de 10 h. El uso de cal hidratada en el agua del transporte atenúa los efectos observados en los parámetros de calidad del agua.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito dos níveis de proteína na dieta de pirapitinga, Piaractus brachypomus, submetidas a pH extremamente ácido ou alcalino. Os juvenis foram alimentados durante 20 dias com três dietas com diferentes níveis de proteína bruta (PB) (25,3; 32,4 e 40,0%) e, em seguida, foram separados em cinco grupos (n=10, três repetições cada), os quais foram colocados em aquários de 60L e expostos aos pH 3,0; 3,5; 7,0; 10 ou 10,5. Os peixes foram removidos dos aquários quando apresentaram perda de equilíbrio natatório, o sangue foi então coletado e o plasma separado para determinação dos níveis de Na+, Cl- e K+. O aumento dos níveis de proteína na dieta (até 40% PB) forneceu alguma proteção para pirapitingas em pH 3,5 ou 10,0, porque o tempo para perder o equilíbrio natatório aumentou após a exposição aguda, mas não foi efetivo para compensar a perda de íons em pH muito ácido (Na+ e Cl-) ou alcalino (Cl-).

The objective this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary protein levels in pirapitinga, Piaractus brachypomus, submited to extremely acidic or alkaline pH. Juveniles were fed for 20 days with three diets with different crude protein (CP) levels (25.3, 32.4 and 40.0%) and then separated in five groups (n=10, three replicates each) which were kept in 60 L aquaria and exposed to pH 3.0, 3.5, 7.0, 10, or 10.5. Fish were removed from aquaria when they showed loss of swimming balance, and then blood was collected and plasma separated for measurement of Na+, Cl- and K+ levels. The increase of dietary protein levels (up to 40.0% CP) provided some protection for pirapitinga at pH 3.5 or 10.0 because the time to lose equilibrium increased after acute exposure, but was not effective for compensating ion loss at very acidic (Na+ and Cl-) and alkaline (Cl-) pH.

Este estudo investigou extratos de Condalia buxifolia como anestésico para jundiá Rhamdia quelen, e também a eficiência do eugenol e do extrato metanólico (EM) de C. buxifolia para utilização durante o transporte dessa espécie. Peixes de dois diferentes pesos (1,50±0,02 g e 165,70±22,50 g) foram transferidos para aquários contendo água com o EM de C. buxifolia ou frações obtidas a partir do EM (n-hexano, acetato de diclorometano, etil n- butano e aquoso, em concentrações na faixa de 0 - 300 °L L-1. O EM de C. buxifolia em concentrações na faixa de 0,5 - 120 °L L-1causou somente uma sedação leve e as frações não tiveram efeito. No segundo experimento outro grupo de peixes foi transportado por 12 h em 15 sacos plásticos divididos em cinco tratamentos: controle, 1 ou 2,5 °L L-1de eugenol e 25 ou 50 °L L-1 de EM de C. buxifolia. Os níveis de amônia não-ionizada foram menores nos tratamentos com ambos compostos em relação à água (controle). Além disso, ambos compostos diminuíram os efluxos líquidos de Na+, Cl- e K+ e, portanto, sua adição na água de transporte é aconselhável, pois reduzem a mortalidade e a perda de íons dos peixes.

This study evaluated extracts of Condalia buxifolia as anesthetics for the silver catfish Rhamdia quelen. The effectiveness of eugenol and of the methanolic extract (ME) of C. buxifolia during the transport of this species was also assessed. Fish of two different weights (1.50±0.02 g and 165.70±22.50 g) were transferred to aquaria containing water with the C. buxifolia ME or with fractions obtained from the ME, such as the n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, n-butane and aqueous fractions, at concentrations from 0-300 °L L-1. The C. buxifolia ME in the 0.5-120 °L L-1range caused only light sedation, and the fractions did not have an effect on the fish. In the second experiment, another group of fish was transported for 12 h in 15 plastic bags. The fish were divided into five groups: control, 1 or 2.5 °L L-1 eugenol and 25 or 50 °L L-1C. buxifolia ME. The non-ionized ammonia levels were lower at the end of transport in the groups with the compounds than in that with water alone. Moreover, both compounds decreased the Na+, Cl-, and K+ net effluxes; therefore, their addition to the water during transport is advisable because they reduce fish mortality and ion loss.

O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar o pH preferencial de jundiás Rhamdia quelen aclimatados em diferentes pH. Os jundiás foram aclimatados por uma semana em pH 4,2±0,1; 5,2±0,1; 6,3±0,1; 7,2±0,1; 8,0±0,1 e 9,0±0,1 e, após esse período, transferidos para um tubo de polietileno com pH variando entre 3,5 e 10. A posição dos exemplares no gradiente de pH foi observada 1, 6 e 12 horas após a transferência. Os resultados indicam que a aclimatação em diferentes pH não altera o pH preferencial dos peixes (pH 7.0-7.6), ocorrendo apenas uma variação transitória em torno de 6 horas após a transferência. Este pH preferencial coincide com o pH indicado na literatura como o melhor para o crescimento desta espécie.

The aim of this study was to investigate the preferred pH in silver catfish Rhamdia quelen acclimated to different pH. Fish were acclimated for one week at pH 4.2±0.1, 5.2±0.1, 6.3±0.1, 7.2±0.1, 8.0±0.1, and 9.0±0.1 and after this period, transferred to a polyethylene tube with a pH gradient from 3.5 to 10.0. The position of the fish in the pH gradient was observed 1, 6 and 12 hours after transference. Results indicated that acclimation to different pH did not change pH preference of silver catfish (pH 7.0-7.6), occurring only a transitory variation around 6 hours after transference. This pH preference coincides with the best pH indicated in the literature for growth of this species.

Verificou-se a excreção de amônia em diferentes estágios de vida (ovos, larvas e juvenis) e determinou-se a influência do tempo de jejum na excreção de amônia no jundiá, Rhamdia quelen. Ovos e larvas foram coletados das incubadoras em diferentes tempos após a fecundação e colocados em recipientes. Juvenis foram separados em duas classes de peso (2-50 e 150-320 g) e após a alimentação foram colocados em recipientes individuais. As águas foram coletadas de cada recipiente para determinação da excreção de amônia. A excreção de amônia pelos ovos foi baixa, mas iniciada a eclosão - 28h após a fecundação, ela aumentou até as 48h. Nos juvenis em jejum, houve significativa correlação negativa entre a excreção de amônia e o peso. Além disso, a excreção de amônia diminuiu significativamente após 12 e 48h de jejum nos espécimes menores e maiores, respectivamente. Portanto, a renovação da água deve ser aumentada no momento da eclosão dos ovos de jundiá para evitar aumento da concentração de amônia. Como nessa espécie a excreção de amônia aumenta após a alimentação, quando os níveis nos tanques forem elevados a alimentação deve ser suspensa para evitar aumento adicional deste metabólito e mortalidade.

This study examined ammonia excretion at different life stages (eggs, larvae and juveniles) in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) and determined the influence of fasting time on ammonia excretion. Eggs and larvae were collected from incubators at different times after fecundation and placed in chambers. Juveniles were separated into two weight classes (2-50 g and 150-320 g) and placed in individual chambers after feeding. Water was collected from each chamber to determine ammonia excretion. Ammonia excretion by the eggs was low, but when hatching began approximately 28h after fecundation, excretion increased until 48h after fecundation. In fasting silver catfish juveniles, there was a significant negative correlation between ammonia excretion and weight. Moreover, ammonia excretion decreased significantly after 12 and 48h of fasting (compared to 6h fasting) in the smallest and largest specimens, respectively. Consequently, during incubation of silver catfish eggs, water renovation must be increased at hatching time to avoid a build-up in the concentration of ammonia. In addition, as ammonia excretion in this species increases after feeding, feed must be discontinued when ammonia levels in the tanks are high to avoid a further increase of this metabolite and consequent mortality of silver catfish.
